licence-plate for Geilenkirchen - Germany
In Germany the first letters of a licence-plate show an abbreviation of the registering city or county. Ours has "HS" for Heinsberg. Until 1972 Geilenkirchen had its own county: Geilenkirchen. Since this had been changed the licence plate looks diffrent of cause (for the leading letters). Lately, it has been changed again. Within the blue section on the left, you see a circle of yellow stars, explaining that Germany belongs to the european union. The litte "D" is standing for "Deutschland" (Germany).

Besides the identification of the registering person, plates have another duty: 3 marking stamps show 1) the county car registration coat of arms, 2) the next date for the environmetal check and another for 3) the technical inspection due date.
Within Europe, the older plates disapear more and more. All nations will use a standard plate like the one in the upper right.
Associations with "HS"
Like anywhere peoples characteristics will be associated with their state and county and licence plates. We drive either very fast or very slow (others say). If you ever have the privilege to drive with such a plate, you will notice people in the real cities react very carefully. Especially if you are driving one of our luxury models with a star-symbol and keep your head on while driving.
If you have to follow one of these cars, be aware of sudden stops. People here always have an eye on crossing animals.
Some people feel ashamed to have a "HS licence plate" and drive without any, the really shouldn't.
