In the centre of Heinsberg, besides the church you might want to see the ruins of an old castle. On an artificially little mountain you see the ruins of a castle originated in 9th century . The small plateau got powerful surrounding walls in 12th century. In front of the water ditch at the south side, likewise on a hill, the fore-castle was situated. Unfortunately some parts of the ruin are no longer accessible and cannot be entered. When i was 14, I saw the escape tunnel which originally led into the nearby little forest (Klevchen). Today only the entry can be seen.

In this fore-castle a (first small) church was established. Later (1128 - 1129) created Oda of Heinsberg beside the hall construction of the church a Kanonikerstift. Later a larger church was developed. The Kypta (from the 1130) of this church still exists underneath today's church.

You can reach the church hill from a parking lot close by the walkers area or using the street uphill, next to the museum. Another option is using the stairs from the parking area at the health insurance office (AOK).
